Mixtape // NOVEMBRE 2014

Après un mois d’octobre bien chargé en anniversaires (beaucoup de balance ici), voilà que les choses se calment un peu et laissent place à un mood plus cocooning. Ça se sent aussi dans le choix des chansons qui ont fait la sélection.

Comme d’habitude les covers (et mash-up) ont trouvé une place dans le lot. C’est toujours agréable de redécouvrir une chanson à travers les yeux d’un autre artiste. Where Is My Mind de Sunday Girl m’a rappelé à quel point j’ai aimé l’originale des Pixies. Glass Animal aussi a bien réussit son coup.

Sinon, ça fait quelques fois que A Friend de Say Yes Dog attire mon attention lors des partys dans le sous-sol de béton de notre amie Catherine. Le genre de chanson sur laquelle je danse tout seule dans mon salon (Ah ces grands moments de la vie). Il y a aussi Belle and Sebastian qui est de retour avec une chanson différente, mais pas mauvaise du tout! Autres coups de coeur: Over the Edge de Empia et Shark de Wonder Wonder. Deux chansons parfaites pour votre brunch entre BFF.

De mon côté (Mélodie), mis à part l’abus intensif de l’album Pan de Fanny Bloom, Picture You Staring de TOPS et Our Love de Caribou, j’ai été teinté par une vague de musique World Beat. En fait, les steal drums, les ragas indiens et les beats reggae semblent avoir pris le dessus dans les ajouts de ma bibliothèque iTunes. Je pense entre autre à la chanson Topknot du band britannique Cornershop, sortie en 2004, ou à Fuck Up de Alkaline que j’ai découvert grâce au DMO invité de la chanteuse Elliphant (ICI) et aux autres chansons que Mélissa m’a convaincue d’enlever lors de nos sérieuses négociations à propos du mixtape. Sinon, coup de coeur pour le solo de saxophone de Sammy Bananas sur la chanson Met You de Misun, ou la chanson Who Is It de Bjork sortie il y a 10 ans (mmm c’est parce que ça vieillit bien) ou de celle d’Alizée, Moi… Lolita (qui vieillit bien pour d’autres raisons…)

After a month loaded with birthdays (lots of Libras here), things have calmed down a bit, giving way to a cocooning kind of mood. It’s noticeable in the choice of songs that made this month’s selection.

As per usual, covers (and mash-up) have found a place within the lot. It’s always nice to rediscover a song through another artist. Where Is My Mind by Sunday Girl reminded me how much I loved the original by the Pixies. Glass Animals also pulled it off with their cover.

Otherwise, A Friend by Say Yes Dog caught my attention more then once at our friend Catherine’s concrete basement partys. It’s the kind of song that gets me dancing all alone in my living room (Ah those great life moments). And there’s Belle and Sebastian who’s back with a different sound, and it’s not bad at all! Other favorites: Over the Edge by Empia and Shark by Wonder Wonder. The two songs are perfect for a brunch with your BFFs.

As for me (Mélodie), apart from abusing of Pan, Fanny Bloom‘s latest album, Picture You Staring by TOPS and Our Love by Caribou, I was taken by a wave of World Beat music. In fact, steal drums, Indian ragas and reggae beats seem to have taken over the « recently added » section of my iTunes library. I’m thinking of Topknot, released in 2004, by British band Cornershop, Fuck Up by Alkaline, whom I discovered thanks to the guest DMO by Elliphant (HERE) as well as the other songs Melissa convinced me to remove during our negotiation sessions about the mixtape. Otherwise, I crushed on the saxophone solo by Sammy Bananas on the song of Met You by Misun, Bjork’s Who Is It, released 10 years ago (because it aged so well) or Alizee‘s Moi… Lolita (which aged well for other reasons…)
